Feeding — How Much To Feed Your Dogs and Cats

While reading this page, please remember the following:

In todays's world, dogs and cats are not starving for food. Instead they are starving for nutrition.

When it comes time for feeding it is important that we let our dogs and cats eat as much as they want at the time of feeding.

my dog is like a vacuum and it would just inhale it allMany people say, Oh, I couldn't do this, my dog is like a vacuum and it would just inhale it all.

What can I say, I'm sure you would too if you were starving for wholesome nutrition.

Remember, nutrition is fuel for the body and if your tanks were always running on empty because the food you ate was low in nutritional fuel, you too would need to fill up more frequently and for a longer time.

Unfortunately, many pet guardians have been brainwashed by the feeding directions found on the labels of commercial pet foods. As a result, most people control or measure the amount of food they feed their pet. People are so used to reading directions on how much to feed that they often feel uncomfortable to feed the way mentioned on this page. But when feeding a wholesome raw meat diet, we want to toss the idea of limiting the amount food eaten out the window.

Okay, let's take 4 steps back for a second or two. Let's first understand why commercial pet foods must provide feeding directions regarding the amount to feed your dog or cat. Essentially, commercial pet foods provide such a poor source of nutrition that your pet literally needs to eat more, a lot more food, in order to get the minimal nutrition it needs for sustenance. Since your pet will continue to eat and eat and eat and eat, commercial pet food companies must put a limit on the amount of food fed otherwise, your pet might eat not only all of the food in the bag, but the bag too! Ironically, by providing directions on how much to feed your dog or cat, commercial pet foods make their food look more scientific. This scientific approach often clouds what should be nothing more than common sense when it comes to feeding.

The very fact that our pets often have endless stomachs when it comes to eating commercial pet food should be one of the many warning signs that the commercial pet foods are of significantly low quality and anything but wholesome. Of course, some will argue but my cat doesn't overeat. Quite frankly, it's hard to overeat when the food eaten has swelled — or more likely, ballooned within your stomach.

I can remember quite well, when during the late 70's and early 80's, Morris My Cat would eat his dry food, then instantly need to drink water. He would then vomit within minutes. I can never forget just how much the dry food he ate literally ballooned. The amount he ate compared to the size he vomited was dramatically different. Of course, a simple test is to take some dry food and soak it to see what happens. For those that are wondering, the reason why Morris My Cat had to drink water after eating his dry food is because there was so much salt in the food back then that the salt literally burned his stomach. My goodness, I can't believe the food my family fed our pets back then. I sure am glad I switched to a wholesome raw meat diet! It's also rather ironic that Morris My Cat was named after Morris the Cat who appeared in the 9 Lives commercial cat food commercials. Oh the irony of it all!

Anyway, unless you control the amount of commercial pet food your pet eats they will continuously eat to the point where they vomit.

When you begin feeding a wholesome raw meat diet then you begin providing maximum nutrition to your pets. This simply happens because a wholesome raw meat diet is just that, wholesome. Commercial pet foods are made using refined and processed foods and thus provide less nutrition than the same amount of wholesome foods.

Think of it like this — you can put regular gas into your car or supercharged high octane fuel. Both make your car move but high octane fuel is known to burn better than regular gas. So it is with food — a wholesome diet provides more nutritional power for the same amount of food. Nothing can replace the wholesomeness of wholesome foods.

Some have a difficult time letting their pets eat all the wholesome raw meat and vegetables that it wants at each meal, but if you can then eventually your dog will begin to reduce its food intake. Generally, I have found that it takes about 2 weeks of eating a wholesome raw meat diet before the food intake is reduced. I say generally because sometimes it happens in less than a week and sometimes it takes longer. If your pet never reduces its food intake then that's when you should consult your vet, preferably a holistic vet, as there might be underlying health problems such as a thyroid problem.

Ultimately, a dog or cat is known to eat a lot of food at one time. Consider the following...

Field scientists have noticed that lions can eat up to 60 pounds of food at one feeding which is up to 15% of their total body weight. Some reports have said that this percentage can go up to 25% as a lion has also been known to eat a whole 35 kilogram impala. Two arctic wolves have eaten a whole musk oxen between themselves and their pups. No matter how you slice it, that's a lot of food. The fact is we don't know how much food your dog or cat will need on any given day at any given moment.

What we do know is that one of the reason why dogs and cats have endless stomachs is because they're seldom given an opportunity to get optimal and/or maximum nutrition, thus never becoming nutritionally satiated (full). Remember, our pets are not starving for food, but instead for nutrition. What's the cure? Simple, feed as much of the wholesome raw meat food that your pets want at each meah. This allows their body to get maximum nutrition. Once your pet is no longer starving for nutrition, they will no longer have an endless stomach.

The fact that so many pets are starving for nutrition can be a factor in why dogs and cats eat stools, vomit, garbage, dead carcasses and other things we don't want them to eat as they are looking for an alternative source of nutrition. Chances are, if your pet has a habit of eating such stuff, then once on a wholesome raw food diet for a while that these habits will disappear!

It is important that you let your dog or cat eat as much of the wholesome raw meat diet as they need at their meal. Once their body becomes nutritionally satiated, they will cut their food intake, sometimes by half the amount, and go on a maintenance diet.

At this point, their daily food intake will vary from day to day depending on their nutritional requirements. It is just as it is with you — I mean, why are you very hungry some days, not too hungry other days and normal other days? Each day your food intake requirements change and so will your dog or cat's food intake. This is what I mean when the supposedly scientific feeding approach of commercial pet foods has clouded common sense feeding method that should be used. It should be painfully obvious to all of us that our pets daily nutritional needs are naturally going to fluctuate based on weather, time of year, amount of exercise, age, etc. Yet, commercial pet foods feed the same amount to every pet. But with a wholesome raw meat diet, we not only do the reverse, but the absolute complete opposite. We let our pets decide how much of the wholesome raw meat diet they are going to eat each day.

Most people are not willing to trust their dog or cat when it comes to food intake, but you should. It is hard for people to grasp this idea and the more you struggle with it, the harder it is to grasp. The less you struggle, not only is this concept easier to grasp but it suddenly becomes powerful knowledge.

Many people are reluctant to feed all the wholesome raw meat their pets wants and needs and so this is why I am mentioning it twice. If given the opportunity to eat what is required and needed, your pet will cut it's food intake. Sometimes this amount can be cut by as much as half or more.

Most people are literally shocked when the food intake is cut back and they email me asking if this is normal. It is normal, but this will never happen unless you trust your dog or cat.

Free feeding must go. A carnivore is used to only catching their food every now and then. As a result they are designed to eat as much food as they can, as fast as they can.

Carnivores are not herbivores and as such, a carnivore isn't meant to continually graze on food — free feeding is really no different than grazing! A carnivore's intestinal tract is shorter to allow food to come in and leave before any raw meat begins to putrefy in the intestinal tract. Whereas a herbivore has a longer intestinal tract to allow the body to break down and fully digest the vegetation it has eaten. If you continually feed your carnivore friend like a herbivore (regardless of the food - commercial pet food or homemade food), then you are in fact, adding and allowing putrefaction to happen within the intestinal tract which is of course a no no.

Dogs and cats should have been named pigs, because they eat like themDogs and cats should have been named pigs, because they eat like them. If your dog or cat inhales food without even stopping for air, then this is a true sign of a carnivore.

It is important that you try to get your mature dog or cat down to one or two feedings per day. However, if your dog or cat is unwilling to accept 1 or 2 feedings per day, don't force it on them. Work with your companion and in time you will most likely notice that the number of meals required will reduce naturally until you get to the 1 or 2 feedings per day...

...if I was able to do this with my cat who ate commercial pet food for the first 15½ years of his life, then you should be able to do this too!

Have you ever noticed in a nature show that a lion can walk right by a zebra without attacking the zebra as long as the lion's stomach is big and plump? I've also seen video of lions that ate so much meat that they literally could not move. Their stomach was just so big and plump that all the lion could do was lay next to its kill.

Not only this, but have you noticed that after eating, the lions play and then sleep before hunting again?

Carnivores are designed to eat a lot, rest and then let the food be fully eliminated before eating again. This is how a carnivore's digestive system is designed to work.

The break between feedings allows the digestive system to fully digest and eliminate the food before the next feeding. It also allows the organs within the body to relax and do their jobs, like detoxifying.

Lions in the wild do not eat every 5 minutes. Lions only eat when they need to.

If you would like an animal that is meant to eat all the time, may I suggest a goat or a cow. These animals are natural grazers, your dog or cat is not.

This page focuses on teaching you how much to feed. In part 3 of my book, you are going use this information and put all of your new found knowledge together as you learn how to make natural homemade pet food.

Editor's Paw Note:

If the food intake never cuts back, then consult your vet because there may be underlying problems such as a thyroid problem.

This method of feeding your pet all that it wants to eat at each meal only works when feeding a wholesome, raw meat diet and should not be used when feeding commercial pet foods or cooked meat diets.

When your dog or cat reduces its food intake, sometimes the reduction in food intake can be so dramatic that people write me and say My pet is no longer eating when in fact the pet is eating, just not as much as it no longer requires huge amounts of food. Sometimes the food reduction scares the person into thinking their pet is sick when in fact, it has reached a new level of health.

The Wonders of A Wholesome Meal!

2010-03-10

Hello everyone,

We are two Pomeranian brothers Dolce & Gabbana.

We were born on the 18th of November, 2009 in Malta, Europe (near the southern part of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea).

We have been struggling with allergies since we started eating at 4 weeks of age.

When our mother took us home for the first time she immediately realised that there was something wrong with us, Big possibility it was allergies. Mummy took us to the vet with no delay. Our vet changed our food, yet another garbage dry food perhaps even worse from what we where having. It was full of corn, maize, corn, maize. Mummy thought this food was more appropriate for chicken and not puppies. This food only made us feel worse with watery eyes, itchy skin and it just irritated much. So Mummy thought ok I will feed them what I believe is nutritional and healthy – nothing can beat natural food.

So mummy started cooking for us fresh cooked food – 2 parts meat and 1 part vegetables and some boiled apples, pears and raw bananas instead of vegetables for breakfast. Our skin and itching had improved in the first week but our eye irritations and watering got worse. To the vet again. This time the same brand food but a veterinary diet and still with corn plus some supplements such Omega 3, Omega 6, taurine, minerals and vitamins. Since Mummy did not know much about these sources she did not trust it and believed this was another commercial crap. She bought it and the food also but never gave it to us. Now Mummy came to the conclusion that we were allergic to wheat – so no treats, allergic to corn – so no commercial food. Mummy had to find what was harming us in her fresh food diet that she believed in so much.

Mummy began to believe that we had protein allergy. So our diet had been adjusted to boiled duck breast and sweet potatoes. At this point Mummy was worried sick about us and our health at this very crucial time while we are growing from babies to young boys. She was worried that we are going to be weak for the rest of our lives just because she did not know what was the proper food for us. She was feeling irresponsible that she had brought us to her without knowing how to take care of us properly. The love she gave us was not enough for our needs. She hesitated to go to the vet again as she felt that he was not understanding her when she explained natural food was her choice to feed us.

Meanwhile Mummy kept on searching on the internet for a remedy, day and night of course this was how she learned to detect our allergies to wheat, corn and also protein – from the internet. Mummy was worried sick, Saying to her self, but if I don’t feed them protein from meat what can I feed them to make them grow strong and healthy? Vegetables were not enough! Dogs are not vegetarians! It is against their nature. Mummy’s head was spinning now feeling down and sick of not eating herself. Spending nights not sleeping, staying on the internet searching for a remedy for our proper intake and praying to mighty God to help her find a solution to make us healthy and happy. On Friday night or early Saturday morning on March 5th, 2010, Mummy came across Pets Need Wholesome Food Also. She thought, here I am, this is the answer to my prayers!

Mummy kept reading till morning – her eyes filled with tears of joy. She knew this was it. Same diet as she was giving us, which she believed in so much except uncooked! So Mummy has found the key. At least, that was what she was hoping.

After she read and understood all which was very plain and easy for her to understand, she went to the freezer, got the fresh meat which she had bought and packed in portions the previous day for us. Mummy thought she would start off with chicken breast minced, although, there was a time that she was beginning to think that we where allergic to chicken meat but after she read the story of the The Sick Pet Project, it encouraged her to give it to us. She thought this is for sure more wholesome than the poor meal of 2 parts sweet potatoes and 1 part cooked duck breast which we have been eating for 3 days now.

So Mummy prepared the well blended vegetables which consisted of carrots and peas and defrosted the chicken mince by putting it in a plastic bag and soaking it in warm water: For this time she had learned not to use a microwave for our food. Than she broke some eggs, washed the shell and removed the white lining inside and also removed the parts which where printed with ink for date of consumption, then she crushed them as fine as possible by putting them in a plastic bag and crushed them further with the rolling pen several times. Unfortunately, in Malta we do not have a homeopathic veterinarian, let alone a place where to buy the homeopathic remedies for pets.

By now it was 6 o’clock in the morning. Mummy had realised that we where hearing her all the time so we were not sleeping in our playpen. While Mummy always gave us breakfast at around 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM, she could not wait to start giving us this wholesome meal and start us fresh on this what she called miraculous raw diet. We where so starving that we ate double the portion we normally eat. Mummy started crying and showered us with kisses and cuddles and telling us that now we were on the road to recovery, good health and happiness. We had a very nice sleep afterword and Mummy was very much concerned about our reaction to the new diet so she kept watching us constantly while we where sleeping like two little angels.

When we got up we where rather upset because it was our digestive system. Mummy thinks we needed some FloraZyme LP according to what she understood in her reading but unfortunately Mummy did not have any on hand, neither could she go buy it nor make it her self for us like she did the calcium. So Mummy decided to rub our tummy and stomach with warm hands after some time one of us went to the washroom on the nappy to get relieved, that was me Dolce, and immediately I started playing and running with my toys. Gabbana was still upset looking up at Mummy with mercy. He did urinate quit a few times, not only on the nappy but wherever. His urine was very clear like water. Meanwhile, five hours has passed and Gabbana had no sign of apatite.

This time we were not so keen on the food both of us. Not much of a nice taste like the food we are use to. So Mummy decided to mash some peanut butter in it because that is our favourite treat. We ate it all from Mummy’s hands, given with love.

My brother Gabbana still has not been relieved and he was sleeping again when Gabbana got up went to the nappy pad and got relieved. Seeing us happy playing and full of life was a great relief for Mummy! We have been fed 4 times a day as usual but much bigger amount, almost double of what we normally ate. Although we are very small, we still have managed to take big meals until this morning. I, Dolce, weigh 1.6 Kg and my brother Gabbana weighs 2.1 kg. Today is our fifth day on the wholesome meal raw diet. At our first meal of the day we ate the usual big meal and after some small pieces of pear and bananas. At our second meal we ate a little less and our third meal was less for Gabbana. Gabbana always seemed to be the strongest.

In these 5 days, we had become two complete different puppies – no excessive itching, no eye irritations and the rough hair patch on the lower part of our back and tail begin to get smoother. Mummy had helped it a little by messaging some olive oil on it too. It is unbelievable how much benefit we have had from the wholesome raw diet in just 5 days. We are already feeling and looking healthier – and much more playful, relaxed and obedient. And all this was not possible without the help and amazing educational information to our Mummy of how to feed and make wholesome meals for us (http://www.pet-grub.com/).

We have no words to thank you enough Jesse. You are a God sent gift to us and those like us. May God be with you and bless you always!

The Results Have Been Amazing

Thank you for this!!

I am a dog trainer and work for a dog grooming business. I have always known that a raw food diet is just plain common sense. I have convinced many pet owners to come over to the other side so to speak, and put their animal on a raw diet. The results have been amazing!!! Of course it has!

I went online to find a way to make your own raw pet food, and I was blessed to find your site. Many pet owners I deal with say they cannot afford the raw food offered on the market. You have put into print what I have been thinking and telling folks. But you have gone all the extra miles!!! Your book is extraordinary and genius!!! Believe me... common sense is genius when it come to understanding animals, their behavior, and their eating requirements. Common sense is rarely used these days in our society. Thank you for all your hard work. Your hard work just made my life and the lives of many pets easier. :) (grinning ear to ear and if I had a tail, it would be wagging viciously)

In Just 6 Days

Here’s our story.

We have 2 rescue Chihuahuas, one is a mix, we believe, with Jack Russell Terrier. His name is Lucky and he is approximately 8 years old. We rescued him 3 years ago. Our other little guy is Chico and he is about 2-3 years old. We rescued him November, 2008 and they said he was 2 but we think he was younger, just looked older and acted older because he was undernourished. We have been feeding NutroMax and Iams dog foods, which we believed were on the better side of commercial grade pet food.

Lucky has lost some teeth and recently developed allergies with wheezing and coughing. The vet gave us 2 medicines for him to give twice a day. On Saturday, May 29, 2010, he came to his breakfast, sniffed the food, shook and shuddered and walked away. I thought that was weird!, but when he gets hungry he will eat. Saturday night he did the same thing and also Sunday morning. By now my husband, Robert, and I are getting a little concerned. Lucky is a little chunky, but not obese, so missing a few meals probably wouldn’t hurt him as long as he was drinking his water, which he was. Well I tried giving him the canned food, which he ate for a couple of meals and then did the same thing as he did with the dry. Sniffed, shuddered and walked away. Well, for a week I tried several things, canned chicken, cut up chicken (sautéed) and then on Friday, June 4, 2010, I started searching the internet for homemade pet food. Praise the Lord! I found your website. I immediately switched both dogs to raw food on Saturday morning. I happened to have thawed a chicken breast, cut it into small pieces and they both chowed down!

Saturday I bought some ground meat, turkey and some beef (lean), and have been feeding them both raw meat mixed with some chopped frozen veggies ever since. The immediate improvement (within 6 days) in both dogs has been just short of miraculous. Lucky is not wheezing and is back to his old bouncy self. He gets the bounce from the Jack Russell side of his family. He hasn’t had his meds since he quit eating because we thought they might have been part of the problem. Chico is more relaxed and not as fearful, which is a strange benefit, but I’m loving it. We believe he was quite abused in his former life and even after being with us for 1-1/2 years still acted fearful. Both their coats are smoother already and their bowel movements are much better, still firm, but not hard. Believe it or not they are even getting along better with each other. I guess just generally feeling better overall.

I am so excited about their new diet, oops, new life style change, and am telling everyone about it and giving them your web site info and a copy of the condensed version of your book.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being there when we needed you.

God bless you and keep up the good work taking care of His creation that give us so much love. And isn’t love the key to everything?
