Nutritive Herbs

Herbs have for a long time played an important role in the prevention and healing of problems. Herbs have been used for thousands of years with great success and long before pharmaceuticals.

Some herbs are classified as nutritive herbs. What this means to you is that they provide nutrition in addition to aiding the body. I choose to use nutritive herbs because they do two jobs instead of just one. Some herbs are used just for healing.

How have herbs been used with animals before?

the ancient and traditional job done by the mahouts, who are the well respected keepers and drivers of elephants in India, are well known for taking a sick elephant into the forests to allow the elephant to pick its own food/medicineWell, the ancient and traditional job done by the mahouts, who are the well respected keepers and drivers of elephants in India, are well known for taking a sick elephant into the forests to allow the elephant to pick its own food / medicine.

The elephants instinctively know which food their bodies need. Elephants are known to enjoy the herb called gotu kola which is a herb that has a beneficial effect on the brain. We all know that elephants are extremely smart and intelligent animals. In fact, elephants have been known to grab a stick with their trunk and then use the stick to clean between their toe nails!

In years past, even our cattle farmers would take a sick cow into a pasture and let the cow forage for the food / medicine it needs. The cow would eat the herbs its body needed.

While herbs do have their benefits, ultimately our pets are carnivores. Thus our pets obtain more benefits in more situations from meat based supplements. Pet GO, Rena GO, Thyro GO and Immu GO are the four glandular and organs (GO) supplements I provide in my store. I use these supplements first before incorporating herbs. Our carnivore friends simply respond better to meat based supplements. Plus, our carnivore friends simply prefer the taste of meat based supplements for obvious reasons. However, I still use herbs to compliment the meat based supplements.

Although our pets do better with meat based supplements and although our pets do not eat herbs as regularly as cattle or elephants, dogs and cats have been known to search for and eat herbs. My dogs, including many others, have been known to eat raspberries, blackberries and even blueberries right from the plant! Of course, cats like their grass and dogs like to eat grass too.

Below is general information about various herbs and their benefits. Alfalfa, which is an Arabic word meaning mother of all foods, is the first one.

Alfalfa:

Alfalfa is what herbalists call a nutritive tonic. A tonic being herbs that restore and strengthen the entire system. It alkalizes, detoxifies, tones, and supports the whole body. Alfalfa balances hormones and promotes pituitary gland function. It contains an anti-fungal agent as well. Traditionally, alfalfa has been used to treat anemia because it is high in iron, bone and joint disorders, colon and digestive disorders, skin disorders, arthritis and ulcers. Alfalfa is rich in enzymes, chlorophyll and aids digestion. Alfalfa is also said to be helpful for those, including pets, who suffer from diabetes due to its rich source of minerals that help stabilize the blood sugar level.

Dandelion Leaf:

Well dandelion, the flower that everyone loves to hate is a clear example of one of Mother Nature's best combination of nutrition and medicine. Its main influence is upon the liver and is an excellent blood purifier. Traditionally dandelion leaves have been used for conditions such as eczema, dropsy, anemia, fluid retention, diabetes, jaundice and rheumatism. Dandelion leaves help improve the function of the kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and stomach.

While dandelion is a wonderful herb to use for the liver, I first use Pet GO to help support the liver. Saying that, one time, a lady contacted me in 1995 because her cat was given 2 weeks to live due to a liver disease. This was before the glandular and organ supplements, such as the Pet GO, was available. So we got this cat onto a raw meat diet and used a dandelion based remedy. Shall we say the cat lived much longer than 2 weeks. The cat lived to the age of 19. To this day, this lady is still a supporter of mine.

Kelp:

Kelp is rich in the B vitamin department. In addition, it has an excellent supply of those extremely important trace minerals. Kelp is helpful in the nourishment of the body due to its ability to stimulate metabolism. It is rich in iodine which the thyroid must have to function properly. Kelp also absorbs waste from body fluids. Kelp is being reported to be very beneficial to brain tissue, the membranes surrounding the brain, the sensory nerves, the spinal chord, as well as nails and blood vessels. Studies at the Gastrointestinal Research Laboratories of McGill University in Montreal, found a factor called sodium alginate in kelp that binds with radioactive strontium 90 in the intestines and carries it out of the body. This is extremely important to note as this factor aids in the detoxification of the intestines.

I personally would not suggest giving kelp by itself. It's better to get kelp already in a supplement so you don't give too much. It's very easy to give too much kelp. For those that with a pet with a weak thyroid, I suggest giving Pet GO and Thyro GO in combination. The Thyro Go supplements contains some kelp. Thyro GO, due to the fact it is a meat based glandular and organ supplement, with some kelp in it, generally does a much better job than kelp alone for thyroid problems.

Please note, when I say you can give too much kelp, that's not an understatement. Too much kelp can, does and will lead to iodine toxicity. Iodine toxicity won't happen overnight, but it's something to be aware of. Of course, a pet that is iodine deficient will take longer to reach iodine toxicity, but either way, just be careful. I've added this information about kelp more for educational purposes rather than to advocate using kelp as a dietary supplement.

Nettles:

Nettles are another nutritive tonic. Traditionally used for treating anemia, arthritis, hay fever, kidney problems, malabsorption syndrome, inflammatory problems and excess mucous conditions of the lungs. Nettles have a good source of iodine and thus has been known to be helpful with goiter. Goiter is the enlargement of the thyroid gland which is visible as a swelling of the front of the neck. Goiter reflects that there is an under-active thyroid, also known as, hypo-thyroidism.

When it comes to aiding the kidneys, I like to use both Pet GO and Rena GO in combination.

There are many nutritive herbs you can provide your pets with. In my store, I now provide PetiGreens which contains organic wheatgrass juice, organic barley juice, organic oat grass juice and organic alfalfa juice. While PetiGreens is an excellent supplement, the glandular and organ supplements are usually a higher priority than PetiGreens. But PetiGreens still has a role to play in the health of our pets.

As I've already talked about the benefits of alfalfa juice, let's do a quick review of the benefits of the other ingredients.

Wheatgrass juice:

One of the ingredients in wheatgrass is juice is called SOD which stands for super oxide dismutase. The benefit of super oxide dismutase is that it attacks and destroys those free radicals that you hear about. Few foods contain super oxide dismutase but wheatgrass is one of those foods that do. The benefits are enormous — everything from helping to prevent cancer to helping to improve the health of the kidneys.

The benefits of wheatgrass juice are numerous. Wheatgrass juice helps to cleanse the lymphatic system, strengthen the blood and remove toxic metals from the cells such as mercury and lead. Wheatgrass helps to restore the body's balance by nourishing the liver and kidneys. Wheatgrass has also been reported to be beneficial for such problems as ulcerative colitis. As with all green foods, wheatgrass also contains a lot of chlorophyll.

Barley juice:

Barley grass juice contains plenty of vitamins, minerals and proteins needed for good health. Barley grass juice is also quite high in vitamin C, iron and calcium. It has been reported that barley grass juice helps to restore and repair cells that have been damaged due to age, illness, medications, toxins, etc. Barley grass is another green juice and therefore has many of the same benefits as other green juices.

Oat grass juice:

Oat grass juice is rich in nutrients including amino acids, vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, lecithin, enzymes and so much more. Oat grass, just like the other green foods, will have an overall beneficial affect on the body including helping the body to detoxify, rejuvenate and to gain increased vitality.

The Wonders of A Wholesome Meal!

2010-03-10

Hello everyone,

We are two Pomeranian brothers Dolce & Gabbana.

We were born on the 18th of November, 2009 in Malta, Europe (near the southern part of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea).

We have been struggling with allergies since we started eating at 4 weeks of age.

When our mother took us home for the first time she immediately realised that there was something wrong with us, Big possibility it was allergies. Mummy took us to the vet with no delay. Our vet changed our food, yet another garbage dry food perhaps even worse from what we where having. It was full of corn, maize, corn, maize. Mummy thought this food was more appropriate for chicken and not puppies. This food only made us feel worse with watery eyes, itchy skin and it just irritated much. So Mummy thought ok I will feed them what I believe is nutritional and healthy – nothing can beat natural food.

So mummy started cooking for us fresh cooked food – 2 parts meat and 1 part vegetables and some boiled apples, pears and raw bananas instead of vegetables for breakfast. Our skin and itching had improved in the first week but our eye irritations and watering got worse. To the vet again. This time the same brand food but a veterinary diet and still with corn plus some supplements such Omega 3, Omega 6, taurine, minerals and vitamins. Since Mummy did not know much about these sources she did not trust it and believed this was another commercial crap. She bought it and the food also but never gave it to us. Now Mummy came to the conclusion that we were allergic to wheat – so no treats, allergic to corn – so no commercial food. Mummy had to find what was harming us in her fresh food diet that she believed in so much.

Mummy began to believe that we had protein allergy. So our diet had been adjusted to boiled duck breast and sweet potatoes. At this point Mummy was worried sick about us and our health at this very crucial time while we are growing from babies to young boys. She was worried that we are going to be weak for the rest of our lives just because she did not know what was the proper food for us. She was feeling irresponsible that she had brought us to her without knowing how to take care of us properly. The love she gave us was not enough for our needs. She hesitated to go to the vet again as she felt that he was not understanding her when she explained natural food was her choice to feed us.

Meanwhile Mummy kept on searching on the internet for a remedy, day and night of course this was how she learned to detect our allergies to wheat, corn and also protein – from the internet. Mummy was worried sick, Saying to her self, but if I don’t feed them protein from meat what can I feed them to make them grow strong and healthy? Vegetables were not enough! Dogs are not vegetarians! It is against their nature. Mummy’s head was spinning now feeling down and sick of not eating herself. Spending nights not sleeping, staying on the internet searching for a remedy for our proper intake and praying to mighty God to help her find a solution to make us healthy and happy. On Friday night or early Saturday morning on March 5th, 2010, Mummy came across Pets Need Wholesome Food Also. She thought, here I am, this is the answer to my prayers!

Mummy kept reading till morning – her eyes filled with tears of joy. She knew this was it. Same diet as she was giving us, which she believed in so much except uncooked! So Mummy has found the key. At least, that was what she was hoping.

After she read and understood all which was very plain and easy for her to understand, she went to the freezer, got the fresh meat which she had bought and packed in portions the previous day for us. Mummy thought she would start off with chicken breast minced, although, there was a time that she was beginning to think that we where allergic to chicken meat but after she read the story of the The Sick Pet Project, it encouraged her to give it to us. She thought this is for sure more wholesome than the poor meal of 2 parts sweet potatoes and 1 part cooked duck breast which we have been eating for 3 days now.

So Mummy prepared the well blended vegetables which consisted of carrots and peas and defrosted the chicken mince by putting it in a plastic bag and soaking it in warm water: For this time she had learned not to use a microwave for our food. Than she broke some eggs, washed the shell and removed the white lining inside and also removed the parts which where printed with ink for date of consumption, then she crushed them as fine as possible by putting them in a plastic bag and crushed them further with the rolling pen several times. Unfortunately, in Malta we do not have a homeopathic veterinarian, let alone a place where to buy the homeopathic remedies for pets.

By now it was 6 o’clock in the morning. Mummy had realised that we where hearing her all the time so we were not sleeping in our playpen. While Mummy always gave us breakfast at around 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM, she could not wait to start giving us this wholesome meal and start us fresh on this what she called miraculous raw diet. We where so starving that we ate double the portion we normally eat. Mummy started crying and showered us with kisses and cuddles and telling us that now we were on the road to recovery, good health and happiness. We had a very nice sleep afterword and Mummy was very much concerned about our reaction to the new diet so she kept watching us constantly while we where sleeping like two little angels.

When we got up we where rather upset because it was our digestive system. Mummy thinks we needed some FloraZyme LP according to what she understood in her reading but unfortunately Mummy did not have any on hand, neither could she go buy it nor make it her self for us like she did the calcium. So Mummy decided to rub our tummy and stomach with warm hands after some time one of us went to the washroom on the nappy to get relieved, that was me Dolce, and immediately I started playing and running with my toys. Gabbana was still upset looking up at Mummy with mercy. He did urinate quit a few times, not only on the nappy but wherever. His urine was very clear like water. Meanwhile, five hours has passed and Gabbana had no sign of apatite.

This time we were not so keen on the food both of us. Not much of a nice taste like the food we are use to. So Mummy decided to mash some peanut butter in it because that is our favourite treat. We ate it all from Mummy’s hands, given with love.

My brother Gabbana still has not been relieved and he was sleeping again when Gabbana got up went to the nappy pad and got relieved. Seeing us happy playing and full of life was a great relief for Mummy! We have been fed 4 times a day as usual but much bigger amount, almost double of what we normally ate. Although we are very small, we still have managed to take big meals until this morning. I, Dolce, weigh 1.6 Kg and my brother Gabbana weighs 2.1 kg. Today is our fifth day on the wholesome meal raw diet. At our first meal of the day we ate the usual big meal and after some small pieces of pear and bananas. At our second meal we ate a little less and our third meal was less for Gabbana. Gabbana always seemed to be the strongest.

In these 5 days, we had become two complete different puppies – no excessive itching, no eye irritations and the rough hair patch on the lower part of our back and tail begin to get smoother. Mummy had helped it a little by messaging some olive oil on it too. It is unbelievable how much benefit we have had from the wholesome raw diet in just 5 days. We are already feeling and looking healthier – and much more playful, relaxed and obedient. And all this was not possible without the help and amazing educational information to our Mummy of how to feed and make wholesome meals for us (http://www.pet-grub.com/).

We have no words to thank you enough Jesse. You are a God sent gift to us and those like us. May God be with you and bless you always!

– Dolce & Gabanna

Shining Bright

2005-03-10

Wynnie's coat shines like I have never seen it shine before. She also had a bowel condition that flared up every 1 to 2 weeks. Now these flare ups are 2 months apart. Her water consumption has been cut by more than two thirds. In closing, there are no words of appreciation that can express how thankful I am for your dedicated interest in the nutrition of dogs and cats.
