What Meats Should *Not* Be Fed To Dogs and Cats

As briefly mentioned on the previous page, we do not feed meats that can cause trichinosis.

Trichinae develop as adults in the intestines and as larvae in the muscles, causing intestinal disorders, fever, nausea, muscular pain, and edema of the face. Trichinosis is therefore the disease caused by trichinae.

So we simply do not feed any meat that can cause trichinosis.

Meats that cause trichinosis include, but are not limited to:

  • bear
  • pork
  • wolf
  • lynx
  • seal
  • walrus
  • wolverine
  • round squirrels
  • fox (arctic and red)

The interesting thing is, and I don't have an answer for this, but the Inuit (Eskimo) always fed their huskies raw seal meat and probably raw walrus meat too. I am not sure how this affected the health of the huskies, but nonetheless, it is not advisable to feed any meat that can cause trichinosis.

Further to this, the Inuit always did and still do eat raw seal and walrus meat themselves. Again, I am not sure how or if this affects their health but personally I wouldn't feed or eat any meat that can potentially cause trichinosis.

Finally, the Inuit often fed the seal meat to their huskies frozen. Feeding frozen meat is not advisable but apparently, the huskies did well on the diet as they were used to pull sleds long distance in the freezing cold winters.

Willie Is A Magician. His Hot Spots Have Disappeared!

2010-04-09

I started following your diet suggestions, for my cat Willie four months ago and have had excellent results. Willie was a very sick cat, exhibiting all the symptoms, hot spots, hair loss, fleas, hair balls and no energy at all.

I am very happy, and so is Willie, to report that all those symptoms are now gone and he has gained all his weight back, has a full and shiny coat, there are no fleas and he has not thrown up in four months! Willie also suffered with hot spots, and they too are completely gone.

My other companion, Putter, has also taken to eating a raw meat diet, supplemented with Eggshellent, and they love it.

Your raw meat diet has turned the page for my cats' health and made me believer forever. Many thanks.

Enjoying Your Method

2011-06-06

Thanks so much. I'm so enjoying making pet food via your method. It's just a breeze now and of course they are all happy. Especially the cats. The cats have always loved the raw diet though. It's night and day over feeding commercial food. I cannot think of one person that feeds commercial cat food that doesn't put up with the indifference that cats display. Having fed commercial for years, I can remember going through different types trying to find something that they wouldn't turn up their nose at. Now, I kid you not, you could get trampled feeding this crew.

Sick Dog Becomes Healthy

2011-05-29

Thank you so very much for your on–line book. China, my 11 year old Shi–tzu has had food allergies for 9 years. I have spent thousands on diets and medicine but recently nothing worked. She was stinking like a cow pie under your nose even though I washed her twice a week with Rx shampoo. Her skin was hot to the touch and oily in just hours after a thorough bath not to mention the hair falling out all over. Anywhere the dog went she left her oily stink — the carpet, the furniture — it was a huge job just cleaning after her trying to keep the house smelling neutral. She was so miserable I considered putting her down as she couldn’t enjoy life and was a touch me not due to her allergies. I have spent countless hours searching for a way to feed my dog so as not to exacerbate her condition. One vet even suggested that she may be allergic to her own anal gland exudate!

Because of her allergies, I started her on just raw meat and warm water for one week and plan to add one ingredient a week until she is on a complete and healthy diet.

In just one week China is smelling and acting like her old self again. I am elated with the progress, I have seen in my dog, on your diet recommendations! China is even wagging her tail again! I can’t thank you enough for your on–line book — you have literally saved China’s life.
